The second largest bank of India is ICICI Bank which has total assets of Rs.3,849.70 billion($82 billion of us) at 30 September 2008. The profit after tax for half year ended 30 September 2008 is Rs.17.42 billion. ICICI bank has about 1,400 branches & 4,530 ATMs in India. The bank is present in 18 countries all around the world. ICICI Bank has subsidiaries in United Kingdom, Russia and Canada. The bank has branches in United States, Singapore, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Qatar and Dubai international finance centre and representative offices in China, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Its UK subsidiary has established branches in Belgium & Germany.

ICICI bank’s equity shares are listed on Bombay Stock Exchange & the National Stock Exchange of India Limited in India. Its American Depository Receipts(ADRs) are listed on the New York Stock Exchange(NYSE).

In 1984, the ICICI bank was promoted by ICICI limited an Indian financial institution. The share holding of ICICI in ICICI Bank was reduced to 46% through a public offering of shares in India in 1998 & in 2000 an equity offering in the form of ADRs listed on the NYSE. In 2001, ICICI Bank’s acquisition of banking of Madura limited in an all-stock amalgamation & secondary market sales by ICICI to institutional investors in 2001-2002. At the initiative of the world bank ICICI was formed in 1955 the government of India & representative of Indian Industry. The main objective was to create a development financial institution for providing medium-term & long-term project financing to Indian businesses in1990s. In 1999.ICICI become the first Indian company & also the first bank from non-Japan Asia to be listed on the NYSE.

The board of directors of ICICI & ICICI bank approved the merger of ICICI & two of its wholly-owned retail finance subsidiaries, ICICI Personal Financial Services Limited & ICICI Capital Services Limited, in October 2001, with ICICI bank.
